NEW YORK (AFP) - - President George W. Bush sought Friday to reassure American voters that the US economy remained fundamentally sound and would return to stronger growth, despite a weak dollar and soaring oil prices.
Speaking to business leaders at the Economic Club of New York, Bush acknowledged that the economy was currently going through a rough patch, and said the biggest challenge was for the US Congress not to overcompensate.
"In a free market there's going to be good times and bad times. That's how markets work. There'll be ups and downs," Bush said.
"Our economy is obviously going through a tough time. It's going through a tough time on the housing market and it's going through a tough time on the financial markets," he added, insisting that good times lay ahead.
"I want to remind you this is not the first time since I've been president that we've faced economic challenges," he added, citing the strains posed by the September 11 attacks of 2001 and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"Every time this economy has bounced back better and stronger than before," he said.
"I believe that we're a resilient economy and I believe that the ingenuity and resolve of the American people is what helps us deal with these issues and it's going to happen again," he added.
Washington's job, he insisted, was to foster enterprise and ingenuity to ensure the US economy was flexible enough to adjust to adversity and strong enough to attract capital investment.
"The challenge is not to do anything foolish in the meantime," he added, appealing for the Democrat-controlled US Congress not to take measures that would over-correct the economy or lead to protectionism.
Bush's remarks came eight months before November's US elections, with control of the White House and US Congress at stake and Bush's Democratic critics eyeing the economy and the vastly unpopular Iraq war as winning issues.
The economy has emerged as the biggest concern for voters, according to recent polls. |

I believe the benchmark for the whole S'pore properties have risen together with the price. So even if it fall, it will not fall too much, as the benchmark is a the next level below the market price.
Usually ppl will simply said is too high for comfort.. it will crash.. or the higher it goes.. the harder it falls..
I hope this will apply to fuel price, building material cost, worker wages, etc. but I don't think petrol price will fall back to $1/litre.
Gov own build HDB also following market & not sell you cheap, eventhrough they keep assuring is affordable. |

PM's worry: Families who live beyond their means
Zakir Hussain
Sat, Mar 15, 2008
The Straits Times
SINGAPOREANS who spend beyond their means and have to go to their MPs for help were placed under the spotlight by none other than Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday.
He noted that as MPs, 'we often see families who have over-committed themselves financially' - for instance those who have been 'extravagant in doing up their homes using renovation loans', or 'bought expensive furniture or large-screen TV sets on hire purchase'.
'The ones with the most serious problems have bought homes which are larger than they can afford, and taken mortgages which they are then unable to pay,' he said.
